The Story Behind the Lion

I was diagnosed with leukemia in 1998. I was less than a year old — so I don’t carry memories of the hospital rooms, the treatments, or the early years of fighting to survive. What I carry instead are the pieces that remained: a prosthetic left eye, partial hearing loss, and a story I’ve spent my whole life learning to understand.

In a way, I think that’s part of the point. I didn’t get to choose what happened to me. But I’ve had every chance to choose what I do with it.

What I know now, looking back, is this: every man has something that tries to define him. The question is whether he lets it close the door or open one.

The Weight Men Are Carrying Right Now

Let’s be honest about something. Being a man of faith in today’s world is not always easy, and it’s not always celebrated. You’re expected to be strong, but you’re told strength is the problem. You’re called to lead, but leadership looks different in every room you walk into — the boardroom, the living room, the sanctuary.

A lot of men I talk to are quietly exhausted. Not because they lack conviction, but because they’re carrying it alone. They’re showing up — for their families, their work, their communities — and doing it with purpose, but not always with peace.

That tension is real. And I think it’s worth naming.

A faith-driven lifestyle doesn’t mean you have everything figured out. It means you’ve decided who you’re walking toward, even when the path isn’t clear.

What “Walk With Purpose” Actually Means

When I built this brand, I knew exactly what I wanted the slogan to say. Not a command. Not a slogan. A reminder.

Walk with purpose.

I chose those words because walking is something every man does every day. It’s ordinary. It’s also one of the most powerful images in Scripture — men called to move, to go, to step forward in faith rather than stand still in fear.

For me, walking with purpose has meant building something I believe in from scratch, with one eye, with hearing aids in both ears, and with a faith I can’t fully explain but wouldn’t trade for anything. It’s meant showing up on days when showing up felt like the hardest thing in the world.

It means your ordinary steps — the morning commute, the walk to the pulpit, the round of golf with your business partner — are not separate from your spiritual life. They are your spiritual life. Every room you enter, you bring your values with you. Every decision you make reflects who you say you are.

That’s the faith-driven lifestyle. Not a category. A posture.

Craftsmanship as Conviction

I’ll tell you why I care so much about the quality of these shoes.

When we designed Daniel and the Lion’s footwear, I wanted a product that would carry a man through a full day and still look sharp at Sunday service and during the work day. Premium leather. A spacious fit that doesn’t cramp the foot. An EVA sole with real durability and comfort. Details that matter.

But honestly, it went deeper than that. I wanted every man who wore them to feel something. Not pride. Something quieter. Confidence. The kind that comes from knowing you’re prepared — for whatever the day asks of you.

There’s a reason we put “Walk With Purpose” on the inside of the box and the outside of it. It’s not marketing. It’s intention. Every time you lace up, you’re making a decision about who you’re going to be when you walk out the door.

Premium men’s footwear can do that. The right product — made with care, designed with integrity — can be a daily reminder of something larger than itself.

That’s what I set out to build.

The Man I’m Building This For

If you’re reading this, I think I know something about you.

You work hard and you don’t apologize for it. You lead — at work, at home, in your community — and you take that seriously. You’re not interested in brands that shout or products that are all flash and no substance. You want things that are real. You want to invest in quality that reflects your own standards.

And at some level, you’re also thinking about legacy. Not in a grand, abstract sense. In a practical one. What kind of man are you building yourself into? What will you have passed on — in character, in faith, in example — when all is said and done?

That question drives me every day. It’s why Daniel and the Lion exists.

This brand is for the Christian gentleman who understands that how you carry yourself matters. That style and faith are not opposites. That you can walk into any room — boardroom, sanctuary, or somewhere in between — and do it with quiet conviction and real presence.
